Cyprus government will use excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, pavers and cement-mixers to fights crisis. Authorities are looking to realise several construction projects to improve infrastructure of the island. These projects will provide for additional job opportunities to people who lost jobs due to the crisis and provide contractors with some additional income.

According to Mr Marios Kitromilidis, ministry of transport official says that part of the projects will begin in 2009. At least, financing has been budgeted for the Ministry of transport in the Republic of Cyprus for the year 2009.

The total sum budgeted for this ministry for the current year is 584 million Euros.

Road construction projects will become those of priority for the Ministry of transport. A new call for tenders has been announced at the end of the spring for construction of a new grade-separated interchange near the new capital stadium GSP. The predicted total cost should be around 27 million Euros. Widening of the highway from four lanes to six lanes on the straights from GSP stadium to Alambra turn will cost around 40 to 44 million Euros.

In the town of Limassol, authorities are looking to prolong the road that should connect the New port to a highway (Pafos direction). The project will consist of two stages. Call for tenders to participate in the first stage (total cost 38 million Euros) has already been announced. Approximate cost of the second stage will be around 35 million Euros. Part of the funding will be provided by the European Union structure funds.

Arhangelos avenue widening project in Nicosia (two lanes will be added to be used only by buses and emergency transport) will cost around 18,4 million Euros to Cyprus tax payers. Ministry of transport is planning to conclude this project in 2010.

New road construction and older road reconstruction projects will also be held in the residential areas. Island authorities are ready to spend around 77 million Euros to complete all projects. New road to the University of Cyprus will start operating in August 2009. The cost of this project was 7,4 million Euros. In addition, government is prepared to spend around 7 million Euros to repair roads overlooked by the city council. Admission of applications will start at the beginning of summer.
